How Medicare Advantage Will Cover You
Only you know the kind of coverage needs that you have, but you should at least look at Medicare Advantage and what it can do for you. This is a robust plan with a lot of coverage, and it even has a few options. Too can chose from high coverage and low coverage Medicare Advantage plans- one that cover just the basics and ones that cover a whole lot more.
The basic coverage, and what every Medicare advantage plan has to include, is Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, urgently needed medical care and emergency medical services. You might recognize the first two items there as belonging to Original Medicare. That’s right- Medicare Advantage includes all of the Original Medicare coverage. However, it goes a lot further than that. It also covers you for emergency room treatment, lifesaving services and more that relate to emergency and urgently needed medical care. That takes care of a lot the more common medical expenses that are not already covered by basic Medicare.
Aetna Medicare Advantage 2019 PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
An Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan in 2019 is a great idea for many people to enroll in. These plans offer the choice to visit any doctor of the member’s choice, even if they are not in the preferred network. Members will however receive greater savings if they use doctor’s that are in the selected networks.
- Medical expenses are usually higher on a PPO than an HMO due to great flexibility
- You do not need a referral from your primary doctor to see a specialist
- Many PPO plans offer prescription drug coverage included in the plan
Aetna Medicare Advantage 2019 HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
By negotiating various rates with providers, Aetna can offer greater savings for it’s members by offering an HMO plan. HMO’s are slightly different than the PPO’s in a few different ways:
- Members select a primary doctor that is in their network
- To see a specialist, you must obtain a referral from your primary doctor
- To get coverage you must see doctor’s within the network
- Emergency coverage is available out of network; Prior authorizations may be needed
On top of all that, there are higher coverage Medicare Advantage plans that offer much more to their subscribers. These start with the basic coverage we just talked about and include cover for common medical costs such as prescription drugs (Medicare Part D) and checkups. Those are things not really covered by basic Medicare, but many people have to pay for those expenses somehow, and it is often cheaper to do so with medical coverage than out of pocket. You’ll have to decide for yourself which is the better option for you by looking at how much you pay for these things and how much a Medicare Advantage plan would cost you.
So, you have basic Advantage plans that only cover the bare minimum. That would be Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, urgently needed medical care and emergency medical care. That’s the basic plan, and all Medicare Advantage plans have to cover at least that. Then you have ones that go further and offer you a lot more. The examples we gave of Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and checkup coverage are just the most commonly covered additional expenses. There are lots of other things that Medicare Advantage could cover for you as well.
How Aetna Medicare Advantage Works
You may already have medical coverage of some sort but be looking for additional coverage. That’s fine, but you need to keep in mind that Medicare Advantage may not be compatible with the plan you already have. If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, for example, you will only be able to choose one or the other. You can’t be signed up for both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement (also known as Medigap).
There would be a similar situation if you had Medicare Part D. If you are signed up for that prescription drug coverage plan and you then applied for one of the Aetna Medicare Advantage plans for 2019 that also includes that same Part D coverage (as many do), then you would have to drop one plan or the other. You could not be signed up for both.
Advantage plans may also overlap and be incompatible with many employer medical plans or union insurance. You will have to see if there is any overlap between the plans before you apply for the new coverage plan. Medicare will not allow you to be signed up for two plans with even one item of identical coverage. Keep that in mind as you decide what kind of coverage you should be going for.
In other words, Medicare Advantage may not work with your current coverage, and you need to take that into consideration as you try to pick the most suitable medical coverage plan for yourself. In time, if you decide to drop one of your medical insurance plans, then you can always sign up for Medicare Advantage later.
What Aetna Has to Offer
There is a reason that we have singled Aetna out to talk about from the many medical insurance companies that sell Medicare Advantage plans. Aetna is not your only option, but it is a good one. They are one of the larger companies that sell these plans, and as such, they can afford to be competitive and offer a lot of member benefits and services that other companies may not be able to. They may also provide better coverage than the competition, but you will have to compare them to your other options to find that tout.

You should compare their rates to see who has the best deal, but don’t forget to factor in the kind of member services they provide and how their service compares to the competition. Ultimately, the most important reasons to choose one insurance company and one plan over another would be how affordable they are for you and how well they cover your medical expenses. But you may find some other aspects of a particular plan or insurance company more important to you as well.
Aetna may change its coverage and its prices in time, and if you don’t like what they have to offer right now, you can always check back with them in a year or so when their offerings may have changed. Your needs may change over time as well, and as they do, you may want to come back and reconsider Aetna and what they are offering. As your health changes or your financial situation changes, you may find they are a better option for you than they were before. Alternatively, if you do sign up for one do their plans, then you may want to reevaluate that in a year’s time and see if they are still the best option for you.
The plans that Aetna is offering may or may not be the best choice for you. It’s up to you to decide what you need out of a medical coverage plan and whether Aetna is offering that very thing. Take your time to compare prices, coverage and services to find what you feel suits you best.
You can talk to your doctor and your insurance provider to see what kind of medical coverage would be right for you. It could be that one of the Aetna Medicare Advantage plans for 2019 would be able to save you money, but you will only know that for sure after you have done some research and compared a few plans and rates. Many seniors do save money with these plans, and you may be among them. Be sure to consider what Medicare Advantage is offering and how it may line up with your medical and financial needs.
